SJ JAZZ COACHES

Thank you for taking the time to visit our coach’s page. Over the years we have been blessed to have some of the most experienced, dedicated and talented coaches contribute to our organization's success. We have found that it's consistent coaching that builds programs, draws talent and creates a positive environment for our players and parents. After you look at our 2017 coaching staff please take a few minutes of your time and check out our current coaches and former Alumni who have gone on to coach at the High School and College level.

Steve Horsley –Coach Horsley, who has now been coaching with the SJ Jazz for sixteen years, will be coaching an 8th grade team during the 2017 season. Coach Horsley currently serves as the assistant varsity coach for the boy’s basketball team at Hammonton High School. He also has prior coaching experience with the Hammonton freshman and JV programs, Folsom Middle School, Hammonton Bulldogs travel basketball club and Waterford Township Athletic Association (WTAA).

Reese Bassett – Coach Bassett has been an SJ Jazz coach for five years. Recently, Coach Bassett served as the head coach for a highly successful 11th grade Jazz team, consisting of numerous players who received interest from college programs. He is an advocate of hard work and flourishes at teaching fundamental skills. During the 2017 season, Coach Bassett will serve as an assistant coach to Coach Horsley at the 8th grade level.

Sug Miller – Having now been a member of the SJ Jazz coach staff for approximately six years, Coach Miller began his tenure as an assistant coach to the club’s founder and director – Jim Gulla. It is well known throughout the SJ Jazz community that Coach Miller has an ability to understand the game from the perspective of his players and thrives at communicating with players of all ages.

Don Lewis – Coach Lewis, who is the former director of the South Jersey Cyclones AAU program, is entering is first season as a SJ Jazz head coach. In addition to having over ten years of successful coaching experience at the AAU level, Coach Lewis spent five years coaching the boy’s varsity team at Sacred Heart High School and nine years coaching in the CYO circuit. He is a former basketball standout at Millville High School who played two seasons at Cumberland County College before graduating from Rowan University. During the 2017 season, Coach Lewis will be the head coach of one of our 8th grade teams.

Matt Lewis – Coach Matt Lewis will be teaming up with his father, Coach Don Lewis, during the 2017 season to coach an 8th grade SJ Jazz team. Coach Matt Lewis has a vast amount of playing experience that includes four years of AAU basketball with the South Jersey Cyclones, four years as a member of the Sacred Heart High School boy’s basketball team and two years of college ball at Cumberland County College. While this is Coach Matt Lewis’ first season coaching with the SJ Jazz, he brings three years of prior head coaching experience as a member of the South Jersey Cyclones. Coach Matt Lewis graduated from Wilmington University with a degree in accounting.

Matt O’Keefe – Coach O’Keefe is one of the program’s most passionate and energetic coaches. He has now been a member of the SJ Jazz organization for six years, spending two years as a player and four years in the coaching capacity. As a coach, he is known to stress defensive fundamentals, high energy and strong communication skills amongst all of his players. During the 2017 season, Coach O’Keefe looks forward to having another successful year as the head coach of our 7th grade team.

Josh Hufty - Coach Hufty, who is the current Athletic Director at Holy Trinity Regional School in Westville, New Jersey, is now entering his third season with the SJ Jazz program. Coach Hufty is a strong believer in the power of pairing devotion to academics with hard work in athletics. Prior to joining the SJ Jazz, Coach Hufty spent thirteen years in the United States Marine Corps and was deployed on numerous occasions.

Tommy Bell – Coach Bell is entering his second year with the SJ Jazz program and will be the head coach of the program’s 6th grade team in 2017. Notably, Coach Bell has over ten years of experience coaching boy’s travel basketball in the Mullica Hill area. Away from the court, he is a graduate of Temple University and a Senior Vice President of Equity Sales.

Ron Battle – Coach Battle, who is a licensed surgical podiatrist and the current Commissioner of the Woodbury Basketball Association, is now entering his second season as an SJ Jazz coach. An excellent teacher of fundamental skills, Coach Battle has vast experience teaching basketball at both the high school and middle school levels. This season, he will serve as the head coach of the program’s 5th grade team.

Marcus Lee – Coach Lee is entering his second season on the SJ Jazz coaching staff and will be assisting Coach Battle with the 5th grade team during the 2017 season. Through his over four years of experience coaching boy’s basketball at the travel league level, Coach Lee has learned how to develop young talent through successfully motivating his players.

Erik Green – Before joining the SJ Jazz coaching staff to head the 4th grade travel team in 2017, Coach Green was a four-year varsity standout at Overbrook High School who played one year of Semi-Pro basketball. He has acquired prior head coaching experience through the Pine Hill Youth Association. An alumni of the SJ Jazz who spent over five years as a player, Coach Green has a long history with the SJ Jazz organization. In fact, Coach Green was a pivotal member of the 2002 SJ Jazz 15U team that finished 8th place in the country after appearing in the AAU national tournament in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Andre Cantey – Now entering his fifth season as an SJ Jazz coach, Coach Cantey also brings over eight years of head coaching experience with the Pine Hill Youth Association. He has an established history of effectively communicating with both parents and players alike. A former varsity player at Overbrook High School, Coach Cantey went on to graduate from Clark Atlantic University with a degree in Business Management. He will be the head coach of one of the SJ Jazz 9th grade teams during the 2017 season.

Ed Coryell, Jr. – Coach Coryell, who has acquired roughly twenty-seven years of experience coaching basketball in the southern New Jersey region, enters his fifth season with the SJ Jazz in 2017. One of the organization’s most experienced and well-diversified coaches, Coach Coryell has experience coaching players ranging from eight-year-old boys and girls to varsity level seniors in high school. In this regard, Coach Coryell has proved his ability to develop talent and has seen many of his players go on to compete at the college level. Coach Coryell will be approaching the 2017 season with his typical level of passion and will be heading one of the program’s 9th grade teams.

Alex Smart – Coach Alex Smart is entering his third season as an SJ Jazz head coach. He played college basketball at St. Johns University in New York and Rutgers-Camden University. Prior to his college career, Coach Alex Smart was a pivotal member of the Timber Creek High School team that won the Group III state championship in 2008. A graduate of Rutgers-Camden University, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics. During the 2017 season, Coach Alex Smart will be coaching an SJ Jazz 10th grade team.

Brian Smart – Coach Brian Smart is now entering his eleventh season as a SJ Jazz coach. He has a long history of successful coaching and has experience coaching players ranging from eight-year-old boys to varsity level seniors in high school. After playing college basketball and spending some time playing Semi-Pro, Coach Brian Smart went on to graduate from Rutgers Law School. He is now a practicing attorney who will be on the staff for an SJ Jazz 10th grade team in 2017.

Brandon Smart – Coach Brandon Smart is entering his fourth year as a coach with the SJ Jazz organization. He played basketball at Timber Creek High School and spent over six years as an SJ Jazz player. Currently, Coach Brandon Smart attends Gloucester County College as a History major. He will be on the coaching staff for an SJ Jazz 10th grade team during the 2017 season.

Ray Jordan – Now entering his fourth season as a member of the SJ Jazz coaching staff, Coach Jordan brings with him an additional six years of AAU head coaching experience for Mainstream Basketball of Winslow Township. Coach Jordan is a certified basketball official who has played at both the high school and college levels. During the 2017 season, Coach Jordan will be coaching an SJ Jazz 11th grade team.

Dan Ortiz – After spending six years coaching AAU boy’s basketball for the Mainstream Basketball program of Winslow Township, Coach Ortiz is now entering his fourth season as an SJ Jazz coach. He serves as the current director of the SJ Jazz youth mentoring program, which provides guidance and teaches life skills to youth in the local community. Coach Ortiz is a former member of the United States Army who currently works as a Minister and a Computer Tech. During the 2017 season, Coach Ortiz will be assisting coach Jordan with one of our SJ Jazz 11th grade teams.

James Smalls – The 2017 season will be Coach Smalls’ first year on the SJ Jazz coaching staff. Before joining the SJ Jazz, Coach Smalls served as a head coach for the Kingdom Elite AAU program. Overall, he has over eight years of head coaching experience at the travel basketball level. Prior to his coaching ventures, Coach Smalls was a member of the West Philadelphia High School boy’s basketball team. Coach Smalls is currently employed by New Jersey Transit.
